POST-ROE MISSISSIPPI

In response to the U.S. Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade that takes away a woman’s right to make her own reproductive health decisions, leadership in the Mississippi State Legislature has established study committees to propose legislation that addresses women, families, and children. Lt. Gov. Delbert Hosemann has already publicly released group members and the schedule for hearings, which you can find below. Speaker Philip Gunn is expected to release the same very soon. Stay tuned to this page for continuous updates.

MLICCI is engaging in the process because we want to be a voice for moms and convey the things they need. We are in conversations with Senators and Representatives to ensure that policy proposals are backed by data and include solutions that increase access to healthcare, increase financial security for working families, provide access to child care so that single moms can go to work, and help put children on a pathway for success.

The Senate study group will be chaired by Senator Nicole Boyd. Members include Senators Kevin Blackwell, Hob Bryan, Rod Hickman, Angela Hill, Dean Kirby, Chad McMahan, Angela Turner-Ford, and Bryce Wiggins.

Topics for the Senate’s study committee hearings include:

Sept. 27: Statistical overview and maternal/child healthcare

Sept. 28: Adoption, foster care and child support

Oct. 25: Childcare availability

Oct. 26: Early intervention

The hearings will be webcast, archived, and open to the public. The public can also email written testimony to WCFStudyGroup@senate.ms.gov.

The comments will be presented to the full committee.

Info about the House commission will be forthcoming.
